FAQ Regarding:
University of Applied Science (FH) and a Normal University (TU, Uni)
German Education System.
Question #1: what is the difference between universities of applied sciences and "simple" universities in german Higher education system..???!!
Answer#1: The main and i think the only difference between Univ of Applied Science and a Normal
University is that a Normal University is reasearch oriented and the courses there are very theoratical in nature whereas the University of applied science is Industry oriented and the
courses there are more about practical implementation and application of technology in the
Industry (less in theoratical depth and more practical). Degree wise the highest degree one
can earn at a University of app. Sience is Masters, they do not offer PHD degress as yet (this
can change in future, beacuse the reserach in practical application fields in becoming more and
more evident in Germany). Since PHD is a research related degree it is awarded by the Normal
universities. However acc to German Law as a graduate from a Univ. of applied science (FH) with
a Diplom or Masters degree one is eligible to apply for a PHD at a Normal University (provided that
he fulfills the requirements like Good GPA, a Thesis on topic relevant to the PHD and e.t.c)
Question #2:I have talked to some of my friends in germany.. they told me that if you do a masters program
from University of App Sc. you wont be able to go for PhD right after it..!! is it true..???
why is it like that?
Answer #2:No this is NOT right. Acc to german academic laws a holder of a Masters degree from both University
of app. Science or a Normal University is eligible to do a PHD and i have seen ppl doing that.
Question#3:is there any difference of standards or quality of education between both types of
universities?
Answer#3:No i dont think there is a difference of quality but obviosly there is a difference of
Approach and focus.
Question#4:Will i never be able to do my PhD afterwards or after some time (or work experience),
or from some other country??
Answer#4:Calm down, ofcourse u can do a PHD in germany after ur Masters or Diplom from a
Univ of applied science IF you are good at what u want to do (have good GPA and a interesting
and genuine research thesis for ur Masters degree). Same applies for doing PHD elsewhere in the
world.
Question #5: and finally, How often do people with app sc. degree get jobs their in Germany??
Answer#5:Very often i would say. The University of applied Sciences were concepted in 1960's to
address the needs of the industry. So in german industry the graduates from Univ. of applied
Sciences are considered very much inline with pratical approach and application of technology.
So it depends on nature of job you are applying for and the profession u are in but in general acc.
to the last federal statics the unemployment rate among gradutes from Univ of applied sciences in
Techn. realted fields was less than the grauates from a normal University.
